Directors Statement
When I decided to tackle this film, I was encouraged by many to shoot it at home in Australia. But my debut feature, “The Aegean”, lives and breathes on a small island called Kythira, off the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Like the great renaissance sculptors of old who believed that their artwork lay within a specific block of marble and who spent years searching for it, “The Aegean” lay on this tiny little Greek island, and our job was to go there and cut away the excess to reveal the story beneath.
The Aegean tells a deeply personal story for me. Under the sweeping landscape, the Greek influence, and the refugee crisis that is the background to the film, sits my own simple story; that of a boy from Brisbane trying to bring his grandfather back from the abyss.
Working with cinematographer Oliver Hay, we were able to infuse a wonderful dreamlike quality and an old-world stillness to the island. I wanted it to feel like that part of The Godfather where Sonny goes back to Italy - out of time, frozen, like Hector.
Ultimately, independent filmmaking is always a question of cost and compromise, but with “The Aegean”, what I’m most proud of is that we never let our ambition be muted by our means. We swung for the fences with the biggest, boldest movie we could. My hope is that you, too, get to experience the magic and wonder of this place, alongside the hope and joy of the story.
