About the Film

Around the Sun

Bernard, a film location scout, is shown a repossessed and crumbling French chateau. Over the course of the afternoon, he slowly falls for both the place and its owner’s flirtatious representative, Maggie, who recounts the story of an influential popular-science book written and set there.

But is their present-tense connection for real, or just a projection of the book’s 17th-century characters?

Director’s Statement

It all started with a château: 400 years old and crumbling, set in an overgrown garden, its majesty still shining through the neglect. Its new owners, friends of mine, invited me to make a film there. That was an easy choice – I’d fallen in love with the place.

Diving into the chateau’s history I found out about a famous book that had been written there in 1686: Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds, by Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle. Using this a starting point, and blending it with ideas he’d had for stories we could set at the château, the seed of a story began to reveal itself to Jon Kiefer, which eventually coalesced into Around the Sun.

The script is all Jon’s work but its themes are deeply personal to me: the loss of identity as someone who spans two different cultures; hope and imagination as the kickstarter of broken dreams; and the all-powerful need to connect with someone at the deepest level, whilst sharing a mutual thirst for knowledge. As a kid, spending summer nights gazing up at the crystal-clear night sky in Greece, I was captivated by the limitlessness possibility of the universe. Making this film connected me back to that feeling.

The elements of the script that might give someone pause – a single location, only two characters, and reams of geeky dialogue – are just the things that drove me to make it.

I loved the idea of making an intimate film about really big ideas. And our film at its heart explores one of the simplest and biggest: the connection of two souls. As our lead character Maggie reminds us: there are infinite universes, and so infinite possibilities for connection, but by that definition, there are also infinite ways to miss out. In that sense, true connection is both a miracle and an inevitability.

“A lot of time and resources get channelled into big movies that feel intrinsically empty; here's a small film - 79 minutes, two actors, one location which contains multitudes.”

Neil Baker, Cinerama | Read full review

“Around the Sun is a witty, humorous, thoughtful take about science, cosmology and romance. Its 85-minutes runtime seem to drift by effortlessly, and right after it ends you pine for more. Although movies that are generally dependant on conversations tend to drag after a bit, this one does an excellent job at keeping the story tight and interesting. The leads’ brilliant acting is also a plus. The movie makes you think and fall in love – with the people, the surrounding and the music that binds everything together.”

Director’s Statement

'Paper Spiders' is a bittersweet story about coming of age in the shadow of mental illness. The film is a journey from comedy to tragedy — much like the life of its main characters, and the personal lives of my co-writer and wife Natalie, her mother, and myself, over the past decade.

In telling a story inspired by our experiences, we wish to shed light on the unexplored subject of delusional disorder, and the pain mental illness inflicts on individuals and family members. The tonal shift from comedy to tragedy reflects the manner in which quirky neurosis can develop into full-fledged psychosis, and a loving relationship can deteriorate into catastrophe and heartbreak.

We hope that the film will be able to contribute to personal and public conversations about supporting individuals with mental illness and overcoming the shame that is attached to discussing the topic.

The film features outstanding performances from Lili Taylor and Stefania Owen as well as our terrific supporting cast, including Peyton List, Ian Nelson, David Rasche, Max Casella, Michael Cyril Creighton and Tom Papa. It was a true labor of love for the cast and crew, the supportive community of Syracuse NY where the film was shot, and for our wonderful producers Anne Clements, and Ash Christian - who sadly just passed away at the age of 35. He was a real champion of indie cinema, and will be missed by everyone who collaborated with him on the making of this film.

About the Film

A gay bachelor party turns spooky when sinister spirits are suddenly summoned.

Larry has been kidnapped by his three best friends for a bachelor weekend getaway at a haunted house. As they sashay through the dusty corridors, the comrades recount the house's legend from a hundred years ago: a murderous woman named Sylvia slaughtered her son and buried him beneath the house's floorboards. But then Larry remembers that he was supposed to spend the weekend bonding with Harrison, his mysterious future brother-in-law. Horrified at his oversight, Larry invites the army-uniformed, hetero Harrison to join his gaggle's gaycation, neglecting to run it by his friends. Later, as they hold a high-spirited séance to summon the sinister Sylvia, the group ends up welcoming more houseguests than they bargained for.

Director’s Statement

In my teens I saw a movie on TV called ‘The Quiet Earth’. A New Zealand movie, it was billed as being about the last person on earth and I thought, what a great concept! The first half of the movie was brilliant; a man going gradually insane as he came to realise that he was alone. But then something happened about half way through - a woman showed up. And then a little later a guy showed up...

I reasoned, if there were at least three people in New Zealand, then by the law of averages there must be hundreds of people still about in other parts of the world. So much for a movie about the last person on earth. Despite my disappointment, the idea stuck with me and over time I saw plenty of other films that were in some ways thought of as being about the last person on earth, ‘The World, The Flesh and the Devil’ (1959), ‘The Last Woman on Earth’ (1960) and ‘I Am Legend’ (2007) all were wonderful films but all ended up not being about the last person on earth.

So that’s where the beginning of ‘1’ came from, my desire to see a movie that literally was about the very last person. And if nobody else was going to make it, then I would! There was also something else I wanted to do - or more accurately didn’t want to do. I didn’t want to have a montage of global icons in ruins: The Statue of Liberty titled to one side, the Eiffel Tower broken in half, Big Ben a smouldering wreck. ‘1’ is about one man’s journey and so we see only his part of the world.

Put simply, I wanted to get rid of the cliches and approach this genre from a fresh perspective. To give the audience something they have never yet experienced - what it’s like to be truly the last person left on earth...

Robert Braiden

Movie Poster

Press

“Excited for his upcoming project, which seems to be a very human look into the ideas of loss and loneliness AND promise some pretty terrifying aliens, Braiden said of the film, “1 is unique in that it truly shows the very last person on earth – literally no one else is left. Films such as The Quiet Earth, I Am Legend, and The World, The Flesh and The Devil all hint that they are last-person-on-earth films, yet all end up introducing other characters. 1 is different. From the action and dangerous excitement of high-speed racing to the quiet and solitude of the natural world, 1 will be a profoundly moving and powerful look at life, love, destiny and being able to let go of the material world in order to find new truths.”

“Robert won the Best Director award at the 2012 Shorts in Paradise Film Festival on the Gold Coast. True Love won the Best Film award at the same festival. True Love was paired with the 2013 Academy Award winning short film 'Curfew' for broadcast on KQED Television in California.

Nine Miles Beautiful won several awards including the People's Choice Award at the Mudfest Film Festival and the Audience Favourite Award at the Brisbane International Film Festival, as well as the People's Choice Award at the Bondi Film Festival. Director’s Statement

SUNFLOWER is a semi-biographical take on the tender years of my youth. The youth that was stripped from me. The youth that I spent with my heart in my mouth. Growing up, I felt alone and isolated, as if I was the only teenage boy struggling with my thoughts and feelings. I spent countless nights crying myself to sleep, wishing that one day I’d wake up cured of my gayness. Society made me feel like I was a monster. I saw no future, only darkness at the end of what I assumed to be a very short tunnel. I made this film to work through my own trauma, and in doing so I hope to give queer teenagers hope— to show them that they are not alone, that they are perfectly fine just the way they are. I also made this film for queer adults— to give them a chance to reflect on their stunted adolescence, and allow them to heal from their trauma and pain. My experience does not stand alone. My experience is the experience of many. This one is for all the kids who learned to love themselves despite the shame. Had I seen a film like SUNFLOWER as a teenager, perhaps I wouldn’t have felt so isolated.

"Writer-director Gabriel Carrubba does an excellent job of balancing the sweet and sour moments of teen life. Moments of teenage cruelty are juxtaposed with scenes of beauty and joy. Martine Wolff’s cinematography adds a dream-like layer to much of the film, especially the romantic moments. It invitingly and warmly holds the audience’s hand as if to let us know that we are looking back at events that have been lived through already, and everything will turn out alright. "

About the Film

Filmed in Gianni Versace's mansion in Miami where every object is a separate work of art, the documentary attempts to bring the genius of the Italian fashion giant to life. Through archival material and the confessions of friends and former colleagues, a portrait of a Renaissance designer emerges, a man who never stopped being inspired by his time to create a strictly personal universe of high aesthetics. The director drags us into his vortex and referring to his work underlines that Versace was not only one of the greatest and most influential contemporary designers, but walking on the sharp intersection between classic and modern, he redefined the way we perceive fashion and clothing.

Directors Statement

‘The Red’ is a story about understanding one's true worth. It explores the conflict between obligation and freedom of choice, the grief of losing a loved one and the lies we tell ourselves, and each other, to protect the memories of those that have passed. It is also about a 7ft tall undead kangaroo, and the start of the apocalypse. ‘The Red’ is a horror comedy film influenced by classic creature features such as ‘The Thing’, ‘An American Werewolf in London’, ‘Jaws’ and ‘Razorback’. This story builds on my short film ‘Waterborne’ and my own experiences growing up in a small rural town, where my father was the local cop. The feature film allows us to see much more of Rippy; the iconic undead kangaroo that made the short a viral success. Even bigger and deadlier than before, we will be using the success of Rippy to bring even more thrills and kills to what ultimately is a fun piece that also deals with some dramatically weighty themes. The film delivers moments of suspense and enough blood and guts to keep the promise of what the short film established. Set in outback Queensland, the sonic landscape will exploit the isolated locations and feature some of the naturally horrific bush and animal sounds that exist in the remote outback. Ultimately, the audience will be drawn into this allegorical world of outback Australia and experience alongside Maddy, the thrills and scares that only a remote setting at night can deliver. Thanks to the authentic small town characters that inhabit this world, ‘The Red’ will deliver genuine horror, punctuated by real moments of pathos, and levity.

That is, until his youngest brother arrives to save Jim from the hangman’s noose. Now, he must do everything in his power to save his brother from the outside threats as well as those from within.

Chet – Wars have the winners and losers and despite surviving the war, Chet did not come out unscathed. He has what would be diagnosed today as PTSD. Whether it was under the confederate division he fought or when he rode with Quantrill’s Raiders or in the band of brothers and cousins he rides with now, he has always been the toughest and most violent of the lot; the perfect amoral killer. His idea of shooting Catherine rather than bringing her along is emblematic of his sociopathic tendencies. Chet is a man to steer clear from.

Conny – The youngest and only other living brother of Jim, he is a cherub faced innocent who was too young to fight in the war and has had a pious upbringing. It helps govern his behavior around Catherine. His morality compared t

o the others is noticeable. His sole purpose was to save Jim and bring him back to their ailing mother that is until they find Catherine, he now stands to protect her against the outlaws, he also cannot deny a growing fondness for the girl.

Val – Younger brother to Chet. Devilishly handsome and knows it, he is always on the look out for a pretty woman. Chet comments that Val has more notches on his gun belt for women than for kills he’s made. But there is a dark side to Val, he can be unruly and downright vicious if he doesn’t get what he wants.

Lemuel – Chet and Jim put up with Lemuel because he’s family - second cousin - and lifelong compadre to Val. His real name is Francis but as boys growing up they all started to refer to him as Pecker and the name stuck.

Cliff – Is the oldest of the team, he is an uncle to the outlaws and has been the bedrock and stalwart companion to the group during the war and into their outlawing days, he was Jim’s confident and right hand man. Losing Cliff causes Jim to lose some of his balance in decision making and leadership.

Producer’s Statement

Producer, Leanne Tonkes says AN ORDINARY DAY is an emotionally searing and heart-warming story about the mutual redemption of a father and son. It is a tender uplifting character driven drama that explores the essence of fatherhood and male vulnerability with the emotional punch and naturalistic style of such films as Nomadland, Manchester by the Sea, and The Rider.

With a combination of realism and elegant poetic lyricism, our film examines how human connection, driven by kindness, is a fundamental need that can drive us to overcome the most profound guilt, fear and mutual self-loathing. It explores the idea that on any ordinary day, a single event can change the course of one’s life forever but through forgiveness and the struggle to overcome, it is possible to come back from the unthinkable.

Masculine norms built on decades of cinema, television and societal expectations have conditioned men that the virtues of masculinity include stoicism, risk-taking, and intelligence-driven decision-making. That focus comes at a cost: studies have shown that male vulnerability is an asset in terms of developing strong leadership, building healthy relationships, promoting positive mental health behaviours, and reinforcing positive fatherly relationships.

Zombie Plane

About the Film

When a plane from Brisbane to LA is taken over by zombies, an eclectic group of high-profile passengers led by undercover agent Vanilla Ice must fight to save humanity.

90s rapper, turned secret agent, Vanilla Ice has less than 2 hours to take control of the unmanned plane overtaken by Zombies, before it is shot down by the US Air Force. With Zombies munching on unsuspected travellers, and the cockpit locked and overrun by an unknown entity, he gathers a band of unlikely survivors for a Zombie killing mission. Only with his trusted tools will they be able to break open the cockpit door and take control of the plane. On their way, they face harrowing encounters with never-before-seen Zombies, who’s DNA has been infused with different animals - including super fast cheetah like Zombies, strong bear like Zombies, mind controlling ant-like Zombies and even a Zombie Chihuahua!

Meanwhile, in Premium Economy, two well known Australian female celebrities have arrived on the plane after eating gummies in the lounge. They are oblivious to the entire zombie attack going on around them and end up having a fever dream about Australia’s most iconic multi-coloured children’s band. Afraid of the outbreak unfolding, Australia’s sweetheart, John Jarrat hides in the economy class toilet hoping to survive the massacre.

Over 200 people jetting their way to LA have no idea that, on the ground, two Generals are arguing as to whether Vanilla Ice is capable of saving the day. If not, Commander Chuck Norris loses out and the plane will be blown out of the sky.

Zombie Plane is a high-octane undead action-mashup of laughs and screams in equal measure.

Director’s Statement

‘Zombie Plane’ is one hell of a flight! With its striking colour pallet and clean, polished aesthetic it won’t look like any Zombie film you’ve ever seen before! We’ll craft a perfect mix of comedy and horror - a true homage to the zombie genre, with edge of seat scares, action and non-stop laughs that will take our audience on a cinematic rollercoaster from the moment we take off.

As filmmakers, it is our duty to let the world know the truth - in 1989, Vanilla Ice’s family was killed by Zombies! Ever since, Ice has been fighting to keep us all safe. Vanilla Ice is a pop culture icon and as life-long fans, we’re pumped to manifest his massive nostalgic appeal and persona into a contemporary "cool as ice” action Hero.

Just like the plot - he can’t do it alone - so with a talented and diverse support cast, we’ll craft a modern day “buddy film” that showcases our characters journey, whist trying to stay alive and save the day, amidst the blood splattering carnage. Tonally, let’s play to the amazing tongue-in-cheek setup of Vanilla Ice playing himself - as an undercover CIA Zombie killing agent, all the while keeping our film’s reality grounded and believable. We want to be invested in our hero’s journey and their survival.

The stakes and peril need to feel real. The script plays to our Directorial strengths of comedic performance, visual spectacle and premium VFX. Combining comedy and heart of “Shaun of the Dead” with the suspense and horror of "World War Z” and the look and feel of “The Barbie Movie”, we’ll craft memorable, iconic scenes, that will become part of Zombie genre folklore.

ROCADA

WRITTEN BY : Ilanthirayanalan Arumugam, Mukund Ramanan & Paul Mahoney
DIRECTED BY : Ilanthirayanalan Arumugam

About the Film

ROCADA is an Australian and American co-production. It is a 116-minute, edge-of-your-seat action thriller feature film set amongst a tropical locale of gangster aggression. Featuring stunning aesthetics and a thrilling visual style reminiscent of Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, the film offers audiences a high-intensity adrenaline rush of vengeance and betrayal. With a story and style targeting broad-spectrum international appeal across Western and Asian markets, the film embraces themes of trust, loyalty, greed, and cruelty in a fast-paced, guns and gasoline-fuelled world of island mayhem.

The film is an original concept, planned as an Australian official co- production between Australian and international producers. The producers will seek to utilise an attractive resource of cast, stunt actors, crew, and locations from across the world, including the US for production.

Off Australia’s Pacific coast on Quasi Island, Alba waits in limbo, held captive by an unhinged crime boss. Two young villagers, Kona and Ratu, escape a wedding massacre down on the docks as a transport ship makes its way to shore. Alba and the villagers embark on separate paths of vengeance as their situations grow dire, but, in a fight for survival , end up joining forces and the trust in each other is put to the test. As the devastating trauma of her past catches up, Alba rises to the challenge, drawing on new courage to fight for her freedom.

Producer’s Statement

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche. Darkness, pain, and tragedy are part of the human experience. The difficult, painful chapters of our lives challenge us and shape us. Sometimes, we grow stronger from them, but sometimes, they have an insidious hold over our lives. We touch on these experiences in our film, “Bliss of Evil”, to tell a story about trauma and personal demons. Among many things, “Bliss of Evil” explores how the way we handle the heartbreak and tragedy of our lives (either consciously or unconsciously) can have a ripple effect on all parts of it. To survive and thrive, we must fight our fears head-on, so that buried, unresolved demons do not find a way to kill everything we hold dear in life. Drawing inspiration from real-life events and stories the creative team heard about multiple local indie bands, “Bliss of Evil” tackles themes such as trauma, toxic masculinity and male privilege, revenge, betrayal, physical and sexual violence. In doing so, the film aims to explore the psychological impact on the victims and their loved ones. With a production team with backgrounds in film, music, literature, and psychology, we hope the film moves the audience emotionally through some of its more psychologically disturbing moments. We also hope we leave the audience thinking and talking about the film long after the credits have rolled. Although the film is dark, we hope the audience can see some light and find inspiration through watching our protagonist draw on strength they did not know they had.

Reviews

“Beyond its nostalgic dive into the nineties, Bliss of Evil transcends being a mere homage. The film captures the essence of that era with care and precision, yet its true strength lies in Morris' unflinching exploration of the harsh realities within self-serving relationships. A bold and powerful opening sets the tone, and while the ensuing killings lack the same emotional impact, the film delivers ample doses of grounded horror that will leave your blood running cold."

“Filled with Spice Girls inspired hair-styles and an abundance of girl power, Bliss of Evil presents plenty of late nineties counter culture. It doesn’t lean as heavily into nostalgia as other properties, but there are enough knowing nods for those who were around at the time to notice. The subtle nuances to the references is a welcome respite from the usual tact of cramming a bygone decade down your throat. By keeping elements toned down, Morris never risks alienating those unanointed to the era and grants Bliss of Evil a life beyond nostalgia baiting."

The Hollywood News | Read full review

“The film works well because the characters and actors are so likable. It’s easy to care about them, especially because the film’s singular setting lends a sense of claustrophobia that translates well to the audience. The story is bloody and violent, but it’s exciting to see the survivors fight back and try to kill their tormentor as they struggle to survive the night."

“Schwab’s direction places performance and screenplay centre stage, resulting in a fascinating trilogy of diverse yet connected stories of longing, conflicted loyalty and corrupt desire. From Peter Stickles’ unethical therapist, Dr Lesh, to Julian Goza’s haunted and caring Jason and Christian Gabriel’s conflicted Wyatt, the characters Schwab and his talented cast bring to life stay with you long after the credits roll. As a result, one comes away from Exteriors, hoping that this is only the start of a world-building project that will see us return in the future and further explore the repercussions and outcomes of each perfectly formed story. ."

Neil Baker - Cinerama Film | Read full review

“Schwab’s direction is taut throughout, and along with his editing work, he manages to give each story a different feel and look. What is interesting about Exteriors, and Schwab’s script in particular, is that the characters in the film are all ultimately self-destructive and alone. They don’t seem to understand each other or themselves. They know how to go through the motions of social interaction, but they are unable to form genuine connections with other people. This makes the film seem particularly relevant to our current, insincere times and Schwab a definite name to keep an eye on."

Director’s Statement

I wrote the treatment five years ago now. And then I meet James through some filmmaking friends and we were just talking about writing something together and I pitched him the idea for Vicious Fun and he just ran with it. He based it off of the treatment I wrote but broke it open and went some new places with it. We wanted to homage certain serial killers and slashers from horror movies and we also wanted to take some references from real-life serial killers. So, it was about finding a battle between those, between each character and against each other. Especially for Bob we did a lot of research on Ted Bundy and I sent Ari (Millen) who plays Bob a bunch of written interviews. For each serial killer, we tried to compile some real-life references with some references from horror movies and sort of mashed it all together.

Horny Teenagers Must Die

Horny Teenagers Must Die

WRITTEN BY : David Zagorski
DIRECTED BY : David Zagorski

About the Film

An over-the-top homage to '80s slasher fare with a difference, pitting a tale of sexual intrigue and weekend hedonism against a violent and bloody dead-teens-in-the-woods backdrop. A group of recent high school graduates head out into the woods for a weekend of sex, drugs and booze-drenched debauchery...only to meet their maker at the hands of a demented killer who uses anything from farm tools to sex toys in a non-stop orgy of eye-popping slaughter. Part pitch black comedy, part body count horror, "Horny Teenagers Must Die!" fuses the narrative structure of the "Friday the 13th" movies with the caustic wit of "Heathers" and the gory, anarchic insanity of cult classics like "Re-Animator," "Street Trash," "Cabin Fever" and "The Evil Dead."

AIYAI - Wrathful Soul

AIYAI - Wrathful Soul

AIYAI - Wrathful Soul

WRITTEN BY : Ilanthirayan Alan Arumugam & Charles Benedict & Mukund Ramanan
DIRECTED BY : Ilanthirayan Alan Arumugam

About the Film

Aiyai: Wrathful Soul is an Australian psychological, supernatural, mystery thriller directed by Ilanthirayan Alan Arumugam in his directorial debut while the script was made alongside Mukund Ramanad and Charles Benedict. The film was produced by Kanesh Mohana Sundaram of Aiyai Pty Ltd.

Kiran, an Indian student living in Australia, becomes a medium to exist for a vengeful spirit of a homeless woman. Kiran gets visions of many things he cannot understand, and the spirit inside him uses Kiran to fulfill its vengeance.

Meaning of the Title

The word ‘AIYAI’ describes a woman from a homeless clan of gypsies who have remained  destitute street mongers for generations. The type who wears shell-horn bangles and wooden  adornments, she lives in a different world, ostracized by the general population. When a woman  of these traits suffers an extremely torturous death, her restless soul re-emerges and returns as  the most powerful spirit to destroy her wrongdoers.

Based on true events

The character of Kiran and some of his experiences in the film has been largely inspired by true  events seen by Director Alan in his childhood.

When Alan was 13 years old, growing up in the village of Palugamam, Sri Lanka, he and his fellow  mates used to commute by busesto attend school in the nearest city. One of Alan’s school mates,  Dhanan had fallen asleep over the return trip and missed his stop. By the time the bus conductor  realized this, it was dusk. As it was late, he had to drop Dhanan outside the village, left all alone in the dark, close to a cemetery. For the next two days, Dhanan was nowhere to be found and  the villagers conducted a massive search. Two women, out collecting firewood in the forest near  the cemetery, spotted Dhanan high up in a tree and biting tree bark.

Dhanan appeared to be in a state of shock. His eyes were blood red and he would try to attack  anyone who came near him. His family confined him to a room as they believed that a harmful  spirit had taken over him, so they conducted an exorcism with traditional rituals. As days went  by, his condition worsened. He quickly became emaciated and would strangely contort his body  out of his normal shape. As he turned increasingly erratic in behaviour and wildly dangerous, he  needed to be tied by chains. It was only a matter of days before Dhanan lost his battle to live and  succumbed to death.

While the concept for ‘Wrath of Souls’ was conceived by Alan, he wanted to experiment with a  supernatural story grounded in realism. In order to achieve this, the real experiences of Dhanan,  the psychology of his internal battle with the spirit, his transformation and ultimate fate were  key elements used to construct the fictional character of Kiran.

A primary focus of ‘Wrath of Souls’, a psychological thriller with supernatural undertones, was to  create characters living familiar, grounded and realistic lives so as to instil a true story kind of  feel, one which the viewer can readily and seamlessly relate to. Therefore, parallel lines were  drawn between the stories of the boy next door, Kiran and a homeless junkie, Amy, both of whom  end up at the wrong place at the wrong time. When Amy is brutally murdered, her remains  manifest into a vengeful spirit which sets out to destroy her wrongdoers by using Kiran as a  vehicle. While the powerful spirit seizes justice by getting its revenge, Kiran gradually loses  himself, reaches a point of no return, and meets an unjust, tragic end.

Director’s Statement

AIYAI: Wrathful Soul (pronounced eye-eye) is developed from an idea inspired by the title itself, an ancient Indian word describing the destitute homeless living on the edge of our world. The script was carefully crafted to avoid the clichés of horror films and designed by intertwining some interesting elements with distinguished characters to make it unique.

A primary focus of AIYAI: Wrathful Soul, a psychological thriller with supernatural undertones, was to create characters living familiar, grounded, and realistic lives so as to instill a true story kind of feel, one which the viewer can readily and seamlessly relate to. The concept and themes within are tailored specifically to engage a sophisticated international audience whilst providing an enhanced viewing experience which far exceeds that of a typical supernatural thriller.

Our protagonist Kiran is a foreign student struggling to get by. A fish out of water - and if that weren’t bad enough, he is soon forced to co-join with a vengeful spirit, one which may in fact match and mirror his own growing confusion and hostility with his personal circumstances and the situations he finds himself in.

As the story unfolds we learn everything is not as it seems and when the terrible events hinted at throughout are revealed in the twist ending, the audience learns exactly what has propelled our protagonist down such a horrifying path. With an ultimately satisfying and tragic resolution, we learn there is indeed a great moral basis for the story’s events.

My approach to the direction of the film was to break down each scene in such a manner as to allow the audience to journey through the narrative with Kiran - to see what he sees and to feel what he feels along the way. So they experience a sense of discovery in nearly every scene.

I am so proud of the achievements of my Cinematographer Damien Beebe, Production Designer Tim Hodgman, and Head of Special effects makeup Elizabeth Jones whose visions perfectly synced with my ideas, helping realize a sophisticated screen palette which set the foundation for a sense of escalating dread and tension, whilst giving our talented actors the scope to thoroughly explore their characters and situations.

Wherever possible my team and I have tried to keep our effects “in camera” or “practical” as opposed to CGI.  I feel the human eye is a finely tuned instrument which is very difficult to trick, that even the way lights and shadows hit practical elements is a subconscious tell to the human brain that what it is seeing is real. Where the opposite is also true with complicated CGI elements and the way light and motion track with them.

Some of the scripted scenes are personal and unforgettable experiences I had in real life. Hopefully one day I’ll have the opportunity to discuss those strange yet inspiring situations to you.

Shot at some incredible locations in Australia, which blend both urban and rural elements, AIYAI’s landscape is both beautiful and haunting.

World-class sound design and editing by the extremely talented Roberto Merlini and Jonathan Brimson along with Jason Fernandez’s blood-chilling music score and gripping performances by a well-known International cast, AIYAI: Wrathful Soul is a complete package sure to thrill, shock, and entertain whilst giving audiences a satisfying viewing experience, one which I feel will leave them asking for more. A film that I envision will be notable for taking the Horror-Thriller genre to the international scale in 2020.

"The production value and environments in Aiyai are a welcome departure from your average low budget horror film, dynamic and dark throughout, and each in a literal and figurative sense. The blending of practical and CGI effects makes this feel like a much bigger production than it is, and the viewer is even treated to the return of flame retardant suits, which used to be far more ubiquitous in horror and action."

Who is Gatsby Randolph

Who is Gatsby Randolph

WRITTEN BY - Marcus Turner & Kobie ‘Gatsby’ Randolph
DIRECTED BY : Kobie ‘Gatsby’ Randloph

About the Film

Up for 2021 Oscar consideration in Best Documentary and Best Film categories, Who is Gatsby Randolph is a funny, poignant wild ride through the red carpets and hills of Hollywood with unfettered access to all the glitz and glamour the city is built on.

Hollywood is well known for glamour, extravagance, and endless paparazzi, but the journey to success is easily overlooked. Who is Gatsby Randolph is the entertaining and ironic story of aspiring music producer Kobie Randolph’s alter ego, Gatsby Randolph, and his road to breaking into the entertainment industry.

The film follows Kobie / Gatsby as he flies on a one-way ticket from Tennessee to LA for a once-in-a-lifetime deal, only to watch it fall apart and be left standing on the sidewalk in Hollywood with no options. Ever the chameleon, Kobie invents the alter-ego ‘Gatsby Randolph’, a fictitious celebrity, and quickly sets a course to conquer the city that had all but slammed the door on his dreams.

The documentary includes many “A” list names – such as Beyonce, Jeff Bezos, Jimmy Kimmel, Jay Z, Steven Spielberg, and Kanye West amongst others – and takes the audience through Gatsby’s journey as he talks his way into some of the most exclusive parties in Hollywood.

"Hotly tipped for consideration in the Best Documentary and Best Film category at the 2021 Oscars, 'Who Is Gatsby Randolph' is a warts and all, fly on the wall account of what really goes down once the stars disappear behind the chaos of the red carpet and zinging flashlights to party like the Romans minus the paparazzi."

"Randolph has a great presence on camera he is clearly part business and part magician. Who else but a magician would be able to go to the lengths that was needed to get some of the footage for this movie over the course of several years (as it was pointed out at the end of the movie) which explains the mockumentary feel, the blurring of the line between feature and documentary makes me feel uncomfortable to definitively label this as a documentary because it is more then that and because of my own preconceived notions of what a documentary is. It is great to be put in a cinematic position by filmmakers and that way I am able to say Who is Gatsby Randolph? is unlike anything I have seen before. I found myself laughing throughout the movie and was led by the hand into ‘it is so crazy that must be true’ territory."
